The brief was to redevelop from a collection of structures built since 1960s to a comprehensive and unified centre that caters for the community cultural needs. Working through several committee structures since the inception, we had developed expertise in preparing, developing and implementing community based masterplan and executing projects to completion.

We addressed inherent contextual problems by beautification of existing building and implementing gradual and scaled form articulation, using varied finishes including earthy render for masonry walls and commonly used corrugated steel. We re-worked the landscaping with reference to existing language to soften the built presence. Our focus was on efficient use of the buildings, appropriately addressed specific Islamic circulation issues and rehabilitated dead areas.

Stage 4 of Community Centre and Mosque for The Albanian Australian Islamic Society (AAIS) was recently completed marking the final stage of the masterplan as first conceived in 1998. Desypher’s long association with the AAIS demonstrates a well thought out approach of a masterplan divided into manageable stages executed over time. Desypher congratulates AAIS on the completion of their centre and we pray that it serves for many years to come to accommodate worhippers and a host of social programs designed to promote participation from within the community and from those who are neighbours to the mosque.
