In 1996, desypher was involved in drafting a 12 year masterplan for UMMA Centre; providing a precedent to other community centres in Greater Melbourne. As part of this masterplan, we were commissioned to redevelop the existing facilities as well design a new addition comprising a sports hall and its ancillary facilities. The design focussed on ESD components in rainwater retention as well as maximising natural ventilation.
Our approach to such development is based on opportunities for community engagement – to create a buzzing and active community centre. It is our aim to encourage societies to move forward towards becoming an integrated and beneficial part of the wider Australian community; demonstrated by addressing this potential architectural misconception and offering a solution that places the Centre in a regional and community setting as a positive contributor.
